A Message from 1990: My AE86 and the Joy of Hakone Touge.Part 2

**Aged Like Fine Wine... or Maybe Not: My First AE86, Back in '89.**
My First AE86 preparing for Hakone touge
**Check out this goofball in the awkward pose... yeah, that’s me.**

This photo is a core memory from May '89. Freshly into my first Hachiroku, the absolute zenith of street credibility. I was pretty full of myself.

My ride? A red '84 Zenki Trueno, Showa 59-era. A pristine, legendary piece of machinery? Nah. Let's just say it had some... character.

Previous owner? A conductor for the Odakyu Electric Railway (lol). Let's be real – that guy probably never even *thought* about drifting. He *was* a client of N-1 Auto, though... which is where the trouble started.

The build sheet was a total dumpster fire:

* **Suspension:** Tired Potenza shocks paired with some cut-up springs of unknown rate (maybe 4k? 4.5k? Who knows.).

* **Exhaust:** A catted HKS system that was more about noise than flow.

* **Drivetrain:** A TRD 4-pinion LSD, thankfully.

* **Footwear:** Tom's wheels on what I *think* were Trumpio 4DR tires. Maybe?

Honestly? The whole thing was a glorified shitbox. A beautiful, glorious, dangerous shitbox.

I poured my entire part-time job paycheck into it, and a huge chunk of borrowed money from a friend. So, yeah, I had to learn to live with its flaws.

But I was no greenhorn. I’d already received my baptism of fire: wall-taps, a full rollover, and two cars scrapped before this one. Expensive lessons. In return, I think I actually picked up some basic driving skills (lol). Okay, maybe just heel-and-toe and knowing how to panic-correct a feint drift.

Look closely at that twitching face. That's the face of a man who knows, deep down, there's absolutely no guarantee this car won't be a pile of metal by tomorrow morning. Every day was a gamble.

But whatever. Pull yourself together, man. The battles are won on the touge. Stick it out, fight the fear. Hakone is calling. Time to go full-send.
